Virginia-born singer and guitar player David “Slim” Simmons is a self-proclaimed “Southerner” with a lifetime of experience in music and world travel that has shaped who he is and the stories he tells in song. At 74, Simmons’ melodic manner of speaking, calm demeanour, and time-tested philosophies explain what it is to be Southern.

“It ain’t a location, it’s a way of life. Being Southern… It’s about people. The Southern people are very open, very kind. Respect for everybody. That’s what Southern is. Hospitality, going out of your way to help people. If I had to wrap it up in one word, it’s a kindness,” Simmons said.
