Mosquito Café“ | One BITE is all it takes”

October 1, 2018|Restaurant Review

One of Galveston’s most unique and successful restaurants is the eclectic Mosquito Café. This privately owned restaurant opened in May 1999 in a restored 1870’s building and has weathered hurricanes and the test of time. It has won many prestigious awards including being selected by the Zagat Survey (America’s most prestigious restaurant guide) as one of the Top 15 Restaurants in the Houston Metropolitan Area and the top “Eclectic-International” Category

Other awards include being voted by Galveston County residents as the:

· Best Overall Restaurant in Galveston County

· Best Breakfast

· Best Business Lunch

Number one in Friendliest Service

The mosquito Café utilizes a unique service system. Upon entering you peruse the menu and chalkboard specials and then place your order with the cashier, receive a number placard and then select a table of your choice and sit back and enjoy your surroundings. Their staff will bring your entrees, utensils, condiments, napkins and your beverage. Upon completion, they will clear the plates, take dessert orders and fulfill any request. Your food delivered to the table is always the freshest and direct from the kitchen. No waiting under heat lamps here.

The food of course is the real star here. Large portion of delicious and offbeat flavor combinations coupled with unusual presentations support their “eclectic” identity. Always the emphasis is on fresh and healthful food. There are no fried foods in this restaurant so you won’t get fries and a burger. What you will get is a delicious hand-formed burger on a homemade bun with a choice of delicious sides (My favorite is the Asian noodles). The bun, like most of the breads and baked goods, comes fresh from their own bakery “Pattycakes” across the street. Make sure you visit after your meal to check out their artisan breads and their unbelievable pastries.

Their breakfasts are legendary on the island. Their bowls – a unique serving style- range from standard meat, eggs and potatoes to some very unusual creations. One of the favorites is their Mosquito Benedict as described in their menu. “A house baked savory scone covered with sautéed shrimp, mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, fresh asparagus, and poached eggs topped with hollandaise sauce with a choice of cheesy grits, roasted potatoes, or apple pecan salad”.

The salads are amazing. My personal favorite is the Thai chicken salad. A grilled chicken breast atop a bed of mixed greens tossed with tamari sesame vinaigrette and topped with roasted peanuts and Thai peanut sauce. Other menu items are too many to describe. Check them out on the restaurant website at www.mosquitocafe.com

And don’t forget their blackboard specials. They have a selection of wines and craft beers and offer pitchers of fresh squeezed mimosas. You may dine inside or weather permitting on their beautiful dog friendly patio. Reservations are accepted for groups of six or more.
